Sonic and Adaptec Join Forces to Develop a Simple Solution for Viewing and Sharing Home Movies

Adaptec to Combine Sonic MyDVD with Digital Video Technology to Deliver Consumer Video Solutions

Marin County, California (August 22, 2001) - Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC) and Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), announced today the development of a simple solution for consumers to view and share home movies in which Adaptec will bundle Sonic's MyDVD authoring software with its 1394/FireWire and USB 2.0 complete solutions.  Combining its leading I/O technology and Sonic's award-winning DVD recording software, the Adaptec and MyDVD product bundles will allow users to record their videos to DVD or CD and play them back on compatible DVD players and multimedia PCs.

DV camcorders are one of the hottest growth segments of consumer electronics, said Mark Ely, Vice President of Business Development at Sonic, but until now, there has not been a way for consumers to easily share their DV home movies with friends and family.  Adaptec's digital video solutions bundled with Sonic's MyDVD software provide the perfect solution, because they enable any consumer with a PC and DVD or CD recorder to create professional-looking videos in the DVD format.  We're delighted that Adaptec, the leader in high speed I/O solutions, has chosen to collaborate with Sonic to bring DVD publishing solutions to everyone with a DV camcorder.

The revolution in home video is here and Adaptec and Sonic are leading the way, said Jeff Loebbaka, Vice President and General Manager of Adaptec's Desktop Solutions Group.  By working with Sonic, the leader in DVD creation software, we are providing the strongest-possible solution to our I/O card users who wish to publish or share their videos. Home DVD publishing is now a reality.

The DVD-Video format is the fastest growing consumer electronics format in history. With over 30 million DVD set-top players and over 70 million DVD-equipped PCs in the market today, DVD is rapidly replacing tape as the video publishing format of choice for video professionals and video enthusiasts. DVD video closely approximates the quality of the DV digital video source and can more accurately convey that quality than standard analog VHS tape. Further, the DVD format offers a high degree of interactivity in the form of menu navigation, support for still images and slide shows, as well as high-resolution digital audio that make it a superior format for archiving, publishing and sharing digital video content.
