Adaptec
Selects Sonic MyDVD for Home DVD Publishing
Adaptec FireWire/1394 Products Integrate Sonic MyDVD
Marin County, California (September 6, 2001) - Sonic Solutions
(NASDAQ: SNIC)
today announced that Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT)
will bundle Sonic MyDVD (Version 3) with its new line of FireWire/1394
products to create a total digital video solution for consumers.
Using the Adaptec Dvpics Plus, FireConnect for Notebooks and
DuoConnect products, Sonic MyDVD makes it fast and easy to transfer
and publish video content on DVDs that can be played on home
DVD players or DVD-equipped PCs.
"Sonic MyDVD was the natural fit for Adaptec's entry into
DV-based home video," said Jeff Loebbaka, Vice-president
and General Manager of Adaptec's Desktop Solutions Group. "Sonic
MyDVD makes it fast and easy to publish on DVD, and makes more
compatible DVDs that simply play better. That's essential in
the home market, where a wide variety of set-top and PC-based
players are used."
The DVD-Video format is the fastest growing consumer electronics
format in history. With over 30 million DVD set-top players
and over 70 million DVD-equipped PCs in the market today, DVD
is rapidly replacing tape as the video publishing format of
choice for video professionals and video enthusiasts. Using
the MPEG-2 video compression standard, DVD video closely approximates
the quality of the DV digital video source and can more accurately
convey that quality than standard analog VHS tape. The DVD format
also offers a high degree of interactivity in the form of menu
navigation, support for still images and slide shows, as well
as high-resolution digital audio that make it a superior format
for archiving, publishing and sharing digital video content.
"Adaptec has emerged as the undisputed leader in DV capture
cards for consumers," said Mary Sauer, Senior Vice-president
of Business Development at Sonic. "DVD players and DV cameras
are two of the fastest-growing consumer electronics products
of all time. Now, with the introduction of Adaptec's FireWire/1394
products and Sonic MyDVD, home users can edit their DV videos
and produce DVD content that can be recorded to low-cost CD
or DVD-recordable drives. This changes the way that consumers
share home videos."
